So in order to talk about some of the similarities and differences, we have to understand what both diets are. The Paleo diet refers to the Paleolithic Era which is pretty much when our ancestors were hunters and gatherers which means they’re gonna be eating a lot of natural foods like meats, eggs, nuts, avocados. And then you’ll also be wanting to avoid a lot of processed foods and vegetable oils which you aren’t able to find during the Paleolithic Era. Then we have the Ketogenic Diet which is actually more focused on a metabolic state where your body produces Ketones. This is exactly why there are differences in these diets. Because some things on the Paleo diet will actually disrupt your state of ketosis. And they even have a lot of the same benefits like lower blood sugar levels, lower blood pressure levels and lower levels of insulin which means you’re gonna be able to access fats. Insulin is really important to watch because when you have high levels of insulins you’re not gonna be able to access fats. Now, remember, ketones are produced in the liver by using fat. So if you can’t access fat, you’re gonna be able to produce ketones which are the main difference between the diets.
Both diets do have low sugar but it’s not as drastic if you’re to overeat sugar on Paleo because you’re not messing up your state of ketosis while the whole Ketogenic diet is based around the state of ketosis you’re in. The next thing that you have to look for on the Ketogenic diet is really keeping your carb intake low. You want to keep it below 50 if you’re extremely active or even 20 if you’re not active. This means you’re gonna have to limit your nuts, fruits, and vegetables on a ketogenic diet. And some people argued that you can’t even have any fruit on a Ketogenic diet. My personal opinion on it is that you can have some fruits but you really have to watch out because a lot of fruits have a ton of sugar, some more than others. And again, the reason why you have to limit your carbs and fruit intake on the ketogenic diet is because it’s gonna raise your blood sugar levels which is gonna raise insulin just to get those blood sugar levels back down to normal.
So right now, you’re probably thinking that Ketogenic is really restrictive and it is. But there is one thing that you can have on it that the Paleo diet won’t allow which is processed and artificial foods. You just have to make sure those processed and artificial foods don’t mess with your state of ketosis. And the last major difference between the two diets is dairy. The Paleo diet doesn’t really allow for dairy while the Ketogenic diet does. I don’t like dairy because most of it is processed and it really messes with your gut health although occasionally I will have some fine aged cheese which is a little bit better.
We talked about some of the shared benefits between these two diets but there’s actually one huge benefit that Keto has over Paleo. Your brain can only use glucose or ketones as a source of fuel. And obviously, when you’re on a Ketogenic diet, you’re able to produce ketones which means your brain’s gonna be able to use those ketones. Ketones are way more efficient and burn more cleanly than glucose does. This means that when you’re on a Ketogenic diet, your brain is actually gonna be able to use ketones which are going to protect you against cognitive decline and give you more mental clarity.
